The History of Christianity (Session 1)
In session 1 pastor Brian covers the historical background of Christianity, beginning with the 400 silent years between the Old and New Testaments and the Roman occupation during Jesus’ time. They highlight key figures like Julius Caesar, Caesar Augustus, and the Jewish expectation of a messiah, as well as the prevalence of polytheism. Significant events include the ministry, resurrection, and Pentecost of Jesus, the writing of early New Testament books, the fall of Jerusalem in 70 AD, and the spread of the gospel despite persecution. From 70–312 AD, Christianity grew rapidly across the Roman Empire due to the witness and love of believers, its inclusivity, answers to moral decline, and the willingness of Christians to die for their faith. Examples like Polycarp’s martyrdom show how steadfast faith left a lasting impression on the pagan world.
